Timing an 86 TPI... complications

Ok i had a friend who is more knowledable then me set base timing at 6*. Well today i was being a complete dumb butt and figured hey, i got this new distrutor hold down plate, might as well put her in. I messed up timing.

I am at a stage of wondering how todo it.

I have a timing light, and let i am at a loss still. I can just put the connector on the outside of thw wire. It wont jump through possibly because i have those really think wires, the double thickness ones. So the only way my timing light will work is by connecting it to the car ot the plug. Well, is that ok todo? or will it change things? IS settign thime this way bad for my current non-broken in situation?

Also. I am having a hard time with my timing tab. I have a 73 block, and a 86 balancer. the mark in the balancer is off like an inch or more so i created another one.

A strobe light is supposed to assist in setting timing. Yet i am have a very complicated time doing so. The only angle i can use is above the water pump down. I can barely see what i am looking for.

Is there another route? besides setting timing without the water pump on?
