Motown 415, streetable?
I was reading one of my trusty car magazines last night and ran across a motown 415 crate engine. my 400 is hanging on the stand and i am trying to decide what to do with it. they got the 415 with a small stroker crank(which i have no desire to do) so mine will be a 406 or 408, depending on how much it needs to be bored. this engine put out 480+hp at 5700!!and almost 500ft/lbs. with 9:1 compression, and a hybrid carb(i know alot of the power is probably from the carb)holy lord. they used the new motown heads for 383-400 and there cam. this is the part i am asking about, the cam is 242/252@.050 .512/.525 112 LSA installed on 108 crank centerline. i dont remember the advertised specs. the amount of power and RPM range(5700) is streetable. but those @.050 specs are kinda big IMO. with that much tourqe, i wouldnt think you would need a big stall in it or really deep gear. i want to know how it will be driving around town. i bought my car to drive and cruise in it. i am wondering if this engine is gonna take that away. anyone know anything about this combo or have any opinons? i am gonna give motown a call and talk to them soon and see what they think. thanks for any input.

using the same components on a slightly smaller engine (like 8 cubies) should still produce about the same power, given that the bore and stroke are alike. I'm not sure if they are the same bore, but if they are you should maybe lose at most 10-20 horses with your combo compared to the 415.

I've had a Comp 282 solid, their XE274H, and XE282HR in the 400 in my 83. All of them ran pretty hard. The XE274 was the most streetable of the 3. I highly recommend that; with a set of really high-flowing heads (maybe theirs even) and 1.6 rockers, you can get those same output numbers easily. That cam and those rockers would give you 230°/236° and similar lift to that one.

funny you should mention that cam, the extreme 274, that was the cam i was planning on running with a set of 461 double hump heads with 2.02/1.60, bowl hogged, and port matched. considering the cost of the heads, and the limitations of my budget, thats probably what i will have for a while. that cam ran good huh? what rpm did you shift at? thanks for any info. lil jay

I had a Performer not RPM intake (hood clearance...) so it didn't breathe as good as it might have. The car seemed to go the fastest if I shifted at about 5200-5400. I had 186 heads, very similar castings to yours in most ways, with 1.6 roller rockers, undercut valves, good port job, etc. I think you'll be fairly happy with it.
