350 rebuild

well my 305 is pretty much dead and so i am going to be rebuilding a 350 soon. my question isnt really about the rebuild though. mostly i want some opinions on things like cam, intake manifold. i already know im going vortec heads, so from there what should i get? i want this baby to be streetable, and it will be backed by an 4spd auto. thanks.

What intake style? Carb, TPI, TBI?

Lotsa ways to skin this cat but the details are critical.

The combo that seems to max those heads out is a Comp XE268H, I'd strongly suggest some better rockers with it than stamped sheet metal ones like Comp 1412s; Performer RPM; Holley 750; 1¾" headers like SLP. People get in excess of 425 HP with this combo.

A converter will help dramatically, especially if your gears are less than 3.42s. 2800 stall and 3.73s would be about the best for the street; you'll definitely propel yourself into a wheel spin issue with that setup. That should take the car into the 12s easily.

Well that seems very nice, but how bout something a little more mild? Id like 320-350 horses or something around there, and torque similar to that, just something mild, sorry to be so picky.

oh yeah, will those numbers (320-350) be possible with my 305's QJet? I only ask to keep things a little simpler, and also if I can, what intake manifold would I want then?

I have a 350 with vortecs and XE268. I first used the stock converter until mine was built for my car. The 268 didn't like the tight converter very much. I use 1.6 rr's and 3.73's. After I got my 3000 stall it made a huge difference.

That being the case you should check out the XE262. Just a little more mild and probably will like the converter better. That is if you will use the stock converter.

I also have another suggestion. I had a goodwrench crate motor that I put a comp cams High Energy 268 in. This cam has .460 lift on intake and exhaust. The motor only had 8.5 compression. I put this in my 83 Z-28 and used 1 5/8 headers and performer RPM intake. I used a Edelbrock 600. The gears were 3.23's. It ran low 14's which is what my 94 LT-1 Z-28 runs. That was a great setup for a daily driver that was decently quick. I dusted lots of mustangs with that motor. If you want more info on this setup feel free to e-mail me.

If you want to keep your Q-Jet, make sure you get a CC distributor as well.

The Comp Cams Magnum roller-tip rockers are great. I believe that was what RB83L69 was talking about, but I don't remember the PN. Just make sure you get the self-centering rockers for '87 and later engines. The milder cam mentioned earlier should do great, also.
