Motor is bogging and tach is acting up

This is a weird problem My car feels like it runs out of gas and then catches itself. But it only does it in the forward drive gears. it is an automatic 5.7 TPI. The tach will slip and go to zero but the engine is reving up this also only happens in drive. I was holding the brake and giving it gas in all gears and only acts up in the forward gear.
Does anyone have clue? Does the ecm read off
the tach? Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure all the connections to the distributor and coil are tight. An 88 has the external coil right?

before you go out and buy a bunch of parts, check the plugs and wires.

bad plug = surging loss of power

burned wire = tach bounces around, because of the singals

late model 91 rs, fully loaded, auto, t-tops, red leather, paint- gm red and yellow blend (light red), custom painted 16" Camaro rims
305 tbi flat base 14"x3" with K&N, hypertech chip, accel super stock plug wires, only use full synthetic oil and delco filter, 2 1/2" cat delete pipe, Edelbrock 3" cat-back
MTX sub and amp, Bose all around

next month: rest of ultimate tbi

Yes this 88 has an external coil. I am getting the right amount of juice (10+ v) going into the tach. I have a helms manual and checked all the connections for the tach. Just before the motor bogs on acceleration the tach goes to zero. It only does it on mid to hard accelerations
