distributor = smoke

A quick question.I just changed my distributor and now when i start my car it smokes for a little while.Why is that.
Car:84 ta 305 lg4 auto

Transmission: T-5 (gonna buy the farm)
Did you put the gasket back on under the dist.? That would cause a leak, and would smoke if it hit the headers. With all the wire loom running on the back of the engine, it is almost guranteed to hit the exhaust. Mine did, and it took a while to find out why.
