Which Driven Gear Color Do I Want??

Well seeing as how I broke my original one I figure I should get the correct one for my new gears anyway. I originally had 2.73's I think and now I have 3.42's. Does anyone know what color the gear is that I now need?

Hey do a search on the tranny board, I did almost the same change you did but I had a 2.77 to a 3.42 sorry I don't remember the combo but they have on there.

It's an 89 IROC and I'm going to be running something like 275/40/17's.

Axle/Gears: 9", 4.33:1
Part# 8642620, Grey drive gear (15 tooth)
Part# 25513048, Yellow driven gear (41 tooth)

That will work acceptably with 275/40/R17 or 245/50/R16 tires as both are ~ 26 inches tall.

The 1st is the drive gear (mounted on the output shaft). The 2nd is the driven gear (the one that connects to the speedo cable). Each drive gear will work with a certain range of driven gears. They must be matched. You also may need a different housing, I believe there are 2, one for 41 up, one for 40 and below.

You need to pull your driven gear out so you can count the teeth on it and see what color drive gear is in the trans. Then you can figure what combination of gears and housing you will need.

Unfortunately it's not always a simple matter of swapping the driven gear.

I had 2.77:1 gears and went to a 3.42:1 gear and was able to do a direct swap from my original gears to these part numbers. I did not need to upgrade to a different speedo housing. You should be able to get away with just swapping gears like I did as your ratios are very similar.
