Shortblock building Question 1

Hey everyone. I'm building a 350 shortblock. I have a double roller timing chain with a 3 way crankshaft sprocket. It's installed on the crank "straight up" in other words, the woodruff keys arent in the "A A A" or "R R R" slots. When I line up the dots with cam gear the #1 piston is only about 3/4 of the way up in the bore. Isnt it supposed to be ALL the way up ? Is that normal ? Thanx

That doesn't sound right at all.

The keyway itself is exactly aligned with the #1 & #2 crank throw. So the dot you should use will be exactly 45° "behind" the keyway. If you install the cam gear so that the dot is down (i.e. the 2 dots are together) you will be at the other instance of #1 TDC besides #1 firing, namely #6 firing.

You must be using the wrong dot for the slot you've chosen. Bring the #1 piston all the way to the top of the cylinder. The dot you should use will be at the top.

??? Are you sure you're looking at #1 and not #2? Make sure you don't get confused looking at the engine backwards or something. Even if you were using A or R, that only advances or retards it something like 2 to 4 degrees. That wouldn't put the #1 piston that far down. If you're sure it's #1 you're looking at and that the cam dot is pointing down and the crank dot pointing up then something is seriously wrong. Check to make sure the crank key and gear are installed correctly. Then check all your parts, like the gears and the cam, to make sure you didn't get a wrong part.

RB and five were right. Although before they responded I did get the idea to look at the old sproket and see where the dot is in relation to the woodruff keys. It turns out the sprocket that I'm currently using has two dots and I was on the wrong one. No biggie I just took the chain off and rotated the sprocket a little to aling with the other dot. Now everything is in order and #1 is ALL the way up like I thought it should be Thanx for all the advice.
