Okay, Lets hear it!!!!

Winter is almost here! So what kinda POS do you guys drive in the winter?

Me..I drive a crapped out 88 celica, rust holes in the trunk and 160,000 miles. I plan on taking the sub out of the camaro and puting in the trunk of the celica, I want to see how much rust I can knock out

Question: does anyone know what type of ecm the celica uses? Is if progamable?

Living in southern cali we don't have to park our thirds in the winter(one of the finge benis) But I drive a 2001 GMC Sonoma flair side with the hot truck package. The wife drives the 89 IROC and I will have the Clone up and on the road within the next few months.

I don't really have much of a choice. We already have 4 cars for 3 people at my house and really 3 of them shouldn't be driven in the snow(87 vette conv, 83 nissan 280zx, 91 RS). So I usually just hitch a ride from friends if it's really bad.

With no other choice I have to drive my only car, but when you find a large empty parking lot covered in ice its worth it.

This might not apply to us here in Texas you might be lucky if you see ice onece a year here.

I just started college in the mountains and it snows a lot up here. So I guess I'll have to see how my car handles in it. Hopefully I won't have to drive it often.

93 Escort GT. Why a GT it has the Mazda MX3 drive train.

Its got some mods, decntly quick and get 31 MPG on the Highway.
I love it even if the fenders are starting to rust.
Fords are good for something.
But dont get me started about the Electrical and interior problems this car has had.
Though I think someone would (and should) shoot me for driving a TTA on the slat covered winter roads in Ohio

I havent seen a whole lot of snow tires in a 275/40/17. Ill just stick with my SZ50s. Any thirdgen is going to suck in the snow/ice unless you have tire chains.

I have a '88 daytona shelby Z, 2.2 turbo car, it's a winter car/one day 12 sec subcompact lets go whoop some honda *** . Also any of deal with the problem of getting stuck at idle? I think it's funny to leave my car in 1st gear(manual) and get out to push it around as the tires spin at like 5mph.

The last snow we had here I had to drive from school to the house. Usually like a 5 min drive, took me 20 min to get home lol. Nearly bald tires with no chains, it drove ok, just kept it slow, stayed off the brake as much as I could. I did stop 5 times on a hill though but got it going again after much wheelspin and spraying the sidewalk (car was sideways goin up the hill hehe) Lots of other cars were stuck in ditchs and the main road north of town was a parking lot for the next couple days. Soooo guess I'll be driving it again this year, can't wait

This is my winter beater:

Laugh if you want, but it gets me there. Then again, we don't get a lot of snow, only 12-14" at a time...

As long as I don't bottom out on 6" deep furrows or drifts, I don't have too much trouble. And I can get a full equipment bag and sticks in the passenger's side.

When I had the 89 Firebird I drove it. And this year I'll drive the GTA...

Slick experiences: (Both in the 89 2.8/5-speed 3.42 open rear)

#1 ~5:50am and then again ~7am heading to morning turnout and the morning dew has frozen in a nice thin layer of ice on the majority of the road(s) Car handled fine, but I could break them loose at ~20 in 3rd just by giving it more than what was necessary Soo that was no problem handling/driving fine unless you give the fun pedal extra motivation

#2 It snowed!!!! YAY!!! So take a little drive in the morning before work and enjoy it cuase it rarely snows here! Soo they already plowed the majority of roads and again drove fine untill the go pedal was nudged along for some extra fun.

I owned the 89 for 2 years it snowed like once in that time. And the snow little more than slush by the time I was heading to school.

My main concern this year is the tires currently on the GTA...

I live in chicago, which brings me tons of snow in the winter. I only have my thirdgen, so when it snows I have to drive my car. I spend most of the time perpendicular to the direction I want to be going...but that can be fun I feel like Im in training for the Dukes of Hazard reunion show. In the past winter cars have included 85 ford EXP, 83 RX-7, 85 escort, and 93 grand prix.

Did you guys see when KyleF said his 93 Escort GT was desently fast?!?! When was an Escort ever remotely fast? Just kidding Kyle. I just had to chuckle when I read that. Don't get mad. The 97 Grand Prix I have for the winter isn't really fun, but its comfortable as hell. And as a 4 door, its easy to get my son in and out of the back. Unlike the Camaro.

my camaro does ok as long as im on a road thats been plowed, but as soon as im in 10 inches of snow, forget it.

last year it took me 20-30 minutes to get down my little side road, about 150 yards all together. the road is high in the middle and low on the sides, and has a small hill to up when getting out. to go in i have to go through all the crap they plow off the main road, back up and get the best running start i can and hold it at 3 grand till untill i get stuck, good thing i just moved but im thinking that this road im on now isnt going to be any better.

im going to an auction saturday to hopefully buy a beastly winter beater that doesnt plow the first 4 inches of snow off the top of a 12 inch snow fall

last year, on newyears eve, my 90 geo prizm's engine solidified for some reason (whistleing like i didnt do it), and i had to pull my camaro out of storage and drive it... you have no idea how hard it is to drive in the snow when the only tires you have for your car are mostly bald micky thompson sportman pros. you know the old saying theirs no such thing as a athiest in a fightinghole? well, same thing goes for camaro's in the snow! i finally got a good deal in 2 used police snow tires... their still on, then again, i havnt been able to drive her since early spring...

now i have a 78 silverado.... talk about ALOT of engine space... HOLY CHRIST!

it's got a wooden flatbed too, great for holding sandbags, and shingles (what i used for balast last winter in the camaro) and whatever else that has weight.....

i think this truck is gonna be a project truck after the camaro is done this year

jon

I drive a 88 z24 cavalier...dirt in color normaly..but its supposidly white...its a tough little beast...i was hit by two dear (yes they hit me) and the only dent it got was when the second one got back up and rammed it...i dont think i would trust my formula in the snow. i would end up skidding everywhere

LOL @snuffit. I drive the RS in the winter. Driving the IROC last winter when I was in Virginia was not fun at all.

When I lived outside of Buffalo I had a 1983 Olds Delta 88 that I beat on for winter. Had big steel-studded tires on the back and slightly thinner ones up front with a really wacky tread pattern. Put truck springs & shocks into it, put in a 26 gal fuel tank, and threw a dual exhaust on it for kicks. That car did awesome donuts but it stuck good in the snow when I wanted it to and never let me down. Couldn't seem to kill that old 307. Thing was comfy too and had great heat. Whole car cost me about $800 with new parts invested.

I run my 92 bird 400 to 600 miles a week all year long. No snow tires, just 140lbs. of sand in the back. No problems at all. In 1976 I had a 701/2 Z-28 and ran that all winter too. No sand just snow tires. Had a blizzard that year, was pushing snow with front bumper. That was ok till the engine quit. The whole engine compartment was packed full of snow. All I could see was the top of the air cleaner.

Our 87 formula is our winter car. I put studded snows all around and it works fine. Its the only rig I have that can get out of the driveway. My pickup is too light and has too fat tires. Its absolutely miserable when it snows.

I drove the Z all winter last year with absolutely no problems. We got quite a bit of snow too. I couldn't believe the amount of stuck sport utes and mini vans i drove by in it. It was almost ironic.

As for this winter, im not sure what im gonna do. The car is getting paint on 10/13, so i dont think im gonna wanna be driving it when theres snow on the ground. Its not a big deal when its just cold, but the salt and dirt is just a little too much. The only other car i have readily available is my 70' Mustang, but somehow i don't see that coming out of the garage AT ALL this winter. hopefully i'll luck out and be able to drive my dads other car, a 97 Plymouth Breeze. But the only way thats gonna happen is if i get to it before my sister does. She drives a riced out 00' Honda Prelude that she swears is gods gift to the car world. I hate it.

owell, thats just my personal little saga....

I drive the z all winter, and we get a decent amount of snow here in jersey. it's interesting, but if you take your time and be careful you can do ok. Teaches you to respect bad weather, unlike the soccer mommies in their Isuzu SUVs that always end up facing the wrong way in a ditch alongside the interstate.

Hey Vader...that's a nice-looking fiero what year is that? We have an 87 Fiero SE here that we use as sort of a "project" car. My Pops picked it up for $50 and we had to push it home, but it runs all right. 245,000 miles strong! Those things are great in the snow, though, with all the weight in the back. I was surprised how fast it is, though, with the 2.8 v-6 and 5 speed.

92 ford Escort GT. big sound system that makes you wonder wtf is making the boom boom sound.
i DO NOT want to even take a chance in driving the formula up here in the harsh canadian prairie winters.. seen too many ppl hit curbs and lightpoles.. *laughs at his mustang friends* teach 'em to drive a ford..
*dosnt' consider the escort a ford) any part on it i can get at a mazda place.. so.. it ain't no ford.. (and the fact that it dosn't break down much kinda says it isn't a ford).. neways.. yeah.. go Escort!
