What would this cam be good for?

It is a big block cam numbers are as follows lift is .510/.510 Duration is 270/270 and lobe centerline is 114.
Daily driver, towing, mild or performance?? It would go in a 454 that is .030 over. Thanks for input.

I assumed advertised. If it was @.050", I'd expect a lot more lift.

Sounds a lot like the cam I have in the 396, except my LSA is 110.

Yea, good call about the lift.

When determining a cams charactoristics is it best to go by advertised or .05?

My cam is 279/285 advertised but only 218/224 .050. If I tell desktop dyno the .050 then it tells me I have 500lb/ft and 330hp, if I enter the advertised numbers I get 450/450...thats a big differance in motor there!

(sorry to hijack!)

At what point does vacuum become a concern in regards to duration? Assuming the lift and centerline are constant what ranges are considered stock vs mild perf vs high perf vs truck towing cam?
Thank again for the input you guys save me tons of time and running and money and confusion.

Well your lobe separation will play a good role in that. Having a wider LSA you could run more duration and have nice idle and vacuum. You will have no problems with vacuum using that cam, especially in a BBC.

As for exact numbers, it would all depend on what engine you are talking about. Bigger motor will eat more cam and still be happy. Maybe five7 can give you some numbers that pertain to your engine, im a SB guy and wouldn't be able to give more than a guestimate.

You've told me enough, I wanted to make sure vacuum was OK. I checked and it is an Isky copy of the 396 Chevy. I ordered it without consulting anyone and after thinking about it I called Isky and whoever I got on the phone seemed to think it wasn't a good choice for my purposes. I figured even if it isn't perfect with 460+ cubes I can live with it. The only other things I intend to do to engine are headers, good carb and I told the machine shop to order pistons to bump compression up a bit (it is getting rebuilt). The heads are just truck heads but I can live with them.

I'm not totally versed on BBC truck heads, but if they're open chamber peanut heads, that's probably more cam than they can use. But, it should be fine for street driving. It will have good vacuum.

Don't put big primary headers on it. A Performer or Action+ is all the intake you'll need.
