Any ballpark figures on HP?

I just installed my new HEI vac advance distributer so everythings running right for a change. I was just wondering if anyone can give an educated guess on how much horsepower I may have compared to stock. The last time I asked for guesses I was running the stock CC HEI unit without the CFi to go with it tripping my check engine light and all I got for answers was change my distributer. The motor is all stock inside with the stock exhaust, so Im not expecting much over stock. Heres whats bolted up
Edlebrock 1406 600 cfm 4bbl
Edlebrock Torker II Intake
Edlebrock 10" signature air cleaner
Accel Super Coil, Cap, and Rotor
MSD GM High Performance Module
A/C condenser and pully removed

Probably none over a properly running CFI. The powerband may be shifted a little, but that intake isn't working well with a stock cam at all. Stock exhaust will be restrictive.

That intake is a total mismatch for a stock motor. Its also about the worst aftermarket intake made. So you probably lost some hp, you definitly lost alot of power under the curve.

Well that kinda sucks, at least I didnt waste any money on the intake. it came with the car when I bought it. picture this if you will, the previous owner swapped from CFI to a holley 2bbl w/ adapter plate and the torker intake without swtiching distributers so it was still CC'd. So Id say Im doing alot better than when I bought it last May. All I really need now is a catback, performer intake, and MAYBE headers. I guess you guys are saying Im at 155-165hp or so huh. Where do the newer 305's make the extra 30 horses? Cam, heads, or both? Id like to shoot for around 200hp, on a shoestring budget it doesnt seem to far away.

You DEFINITELY need headers. That is the #1 restriction in all stock thirdgens. Headers and exhaust shoudl be your first money spent.

The CFI was originally rated at 170 hp. It is the same engine as the L69 "H.O." motor (which was rated at 190 hp) in every way, except for the intake.

My guess is that currently you are probably able to make around the same peak hp, maybe 10 more, than the stock CFI, but you've definitely lost a lot of lower RPM torque, compared to the stock CFI. In a drag race, I'd put money on a stock CFI set up (properly running) over your current combo.

If you get headers and exhaust, and a better intake on there, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to put down around 230 hp w/no problem, w/that cam and those heads.

The newer 305's have the same heads, and the same cam or a worse cam. Your engine has the best flat tappet cam that came in a 305. Get teh exhaust sorted out and a modern design intake on there and you'll be happy....for a while.

I wouldnt say it was the worst, I went from the stock 84'ish L69 and went with the Edelbrock cam and intake set up and noticed a definate improvement over what it was for sure, however ,the motor isnt stock and has ported 416's.

I WILL say that I'f I ever decide to invest anymore in the motor I will end up getting a Comp Cam.

Ok, 84TA but which intake was that, a Performer or Torker II? I bet it was a performer. I groaned in disgust when I looked at summits catalog and saw which intake I had, cuz I knew it was totally wrong for my car. Unfortunatly Im stuck with it for a while due to a lack of funds and an already upset wife with $350 worth of misc brake work to pass inspection. Same goes for exhaust. I would love nothing more than to scrap that stocker from 82 (yes it still has the dual muffler twin t inlet setup from 82)but alas, no money. Maybe the header fairy will bring me some next year.

Yep the Performer. I'm lucky when it comes to emmisions and inspections, my area doesnt do it so it's no cats for me and absolutley no emmisions on my car. My car isnt a dailey driver so I just buy parts when I can.

Ah yes same here with emmisions.
Its also about the worst aftermarket intake made.
He's refering to my torker II intake which is much worse than your performer. Mine is more for a drag car or maybe a stock/sprint car. Definetly not a mostly stock 82 T/A.

Is it ok to pull the charcoal can? Two lines have already been cut previously, but I dont know where they went. Is there any performance benefit to removing this? Thanks for all the info.

there was a nice article in chevy high performance (that or super chevy) comparing the accel aftermarket HEI vs stock HEI, they dynoed, but didnt see any noticible increases in HP/TQ, BUT they did notice the response from throttle was much better and the car ran better as well throughout the rpm range. See if u can find thre article on google, it's a good one. I think they used a c2 vett, cant remember. This was prob 1-2 months ago.
