IAC everybodys problem
I can't help but notice the amount of cars
that have problems with the iac including
myself. Is there anyway to run our cars without it? Would a throttle stop screw to
hold at 900-1000 rpm hurt anything?
Where is the best place on the web to order
one? The local GM wants $84 and a pint of blood

BR,
If it is completely inoperative, you need to check the system to make sure the ECM isn't toasted. The driver transistors for the IAC may have opened (fried) and a new IAC wouldn't do you much good there. You can test the resistance of the individual IAC coils, or install a test IAC to see if it reacts at all.
You could also try removing, cleaning, and lubricating the IAC rack gear (pintle shaft). Many times these will get gummed with varnish just like the air passages and throttle body, and can be revived by cleaning.

Yes, you can run the engine with the IAC disabled, but you'll have part throttle driveability problems.
There will be no way for the engine speed to be adjusted for, say, turning on the A/C.
I ran mine when my IAC was acting up last winter. The car was driveable, but low speed perormance suffered.
I merely cranked out the throttle stop screw until I got the rpms I wanted - 900 - and drove the car that way until I found time to sort out the problem (new plug-in connector from AutoZone).
Hope this helps.
