1980 Cadillac 368 motor ???'s

My mom has this Cad Deville or Seville and I think it has a 368 in it. What is the 368 exactly and would it fit in my Camaro? If so I'd like to stroke it and get some good power out of it if possible. Or is it even worth it. After doing some research, the 500 Cad motor seems to be the way to go. If I got a 500, what kind of probs am I looking at. Thanks.

the 368 is cadilac's poor excuse for a v8 in a nice car. yeah, with alot of work it'll fit. that is just plain a discusting idea and you may wish to seek consuling.

Luckily I figured that out before I got to the counselling stage. The 500 may be my next motor.

just buy a crate 502, youll be better off. the 501 caddy is a dog in the first place, and secondly had a lot of oil distribution probs, not to mention the sheer difficulty of a swap of that magnitude. better yet, build a fast small block, youll end up with higher revs (due mainly to shorter stroke) and 150-200 pounds less weight on the nose. you dont need a big block these days, too many ways to make more with less.

The 368 was the last good Cadillac motor of the Eighties.

'75 and '76 had the 500, the biggest Cadillac engine.

When the downsized model came out in '77, it had the 425.

For 1980, the car was the same, but the body was completely redesigned. This was the year for the 368 V8.

For 1981, the 368 was still there, but it was fitted with the 4-6-8 system. At highway speeds, the engine would run on just 4 cylinders to save gas. As you drive more agressively, or climb hills, or floor the gas, more cylinders get turned on. It was an ingenious system, and it saved gas while still providing power.

But as it is with any new technology from GM, it turned to to break a lot. Most people just had the system modified so all 8 cylinders stayed on all the time. And then they never bought a Cadillac again. Stupid GM.

Anyway, from '82-85, they had an all-new 4100 (4.1 liter) aluminum V8 with TBI. It ran great, and made (just) enough power, but if you let it overheat even once, the engine was ruined.

So, starting in '86, they just gave up and started installing Oldsmobile engines.

----------------------------

Anyway, back to your original question of putting the 368 in your car.

I don't know all the technical details of this engine. I'm sure it's good enough, but I wouldn't see any reason it could be any better than a standard 350.

The real issue here is that you're not going to be able to find any performance parts for it. I'm sure you'll have a tough time finding aftermarket heads, intakes, headers, et cetera. Theoretically, you could fabricate all these things and get the engine to produce power, but the economies of doing so would be of Bill Gates-size proportions.

If you're going to go through all the trouble of making some oddball engine fit, you might as well go all the way and use the 500.

Or as others here have said, it would probably be a lot easier (and cheaper) to just build an install a standard Chevrolet small-block engine.
