Just an idea your exsohast may be hitting something if your car has worn motor mount's the engien can be lifting & causing it to hit . Pop the hood and grab the throtle give it some gas and see if it make's the nosie . If it make's no kind of clank from anywhere you could have somekind of drive tran problem .

Could be a worn out transmission mount.

The tranny isn't attached to the chassis properly, and is 'banging' on what its supposed to be bolted to.

Get that car off the ground and crawl under it and push up on the tranny . On the stanerd's I know that there is a rubber bushing with a bolt stiking out the bottom located tord the tail part of the tranny auto should be the same . The bolt go's throgh the cross mount . I hope this is your problem becuse it an easy fix . oh I forgot to say one time my tranny came losse from the bell but start with the mount .

When you get the car of the ground lay on your back and push up tord the tail ( By the drive shaft) leave the bolt in . If you can't move it put your jack under it an jack up a little at a time you will see the tranny lift .Then look at the mount to see if it is torn . It's a black square pice of rubber.
