Depends on the gun you'll use. If you're going to use HLVP then you need a larger compressor to keep up with it, most of these guns are rated needing 12-15CFM of air.
I have a Sharpe Platnium, it's a small gun, doesn't put out a lot of paint, but does a better job than I'm capable of, anyway, it's a low air consumption gun, only needs about 6-8CFM and my cheapo Craftsmen 5hp oilless (or nosiyness) compressor runs it just fine.
I use the oilless to spray with, and have a few water seperators in the lines to trap moisture.
Painting sucks, but hell, who can afford to take things to a shop nowdays?
I'd also suggest a good fresh-air system, I don't own one, but borrow a buddies (Hobby Air??) when needed.
