Lost...Which Plug Does What
its a 86 (i'm guessing) 305 stock wiring harness....its a 89 vette motor...i have 3 plugs (pictured) that are up by the altenator, I have no clue what they do...then the other plug is back by the distributor...also, I found the 4 prong square plug that plugs into the tranny, and it looks like it was modified, because it has 2 wires spliced together....so there is only 3 wires coming out of it... I don't know where the wires came from either...so i was just wondering if anybody could tell me what any of these 5 plugs do...

I found this in the pile of old TPI stuff...the plug fits, is this the MAT? and if so, how do I go about hooking it up...it looks like it has some vacuum lines on it and whatnot...

The picture you just posted is of an EGR vacuum solenoid. Couldn't tell you where it goes on a TPI motor, but I know that's it. Sorry I'm not of more help.

That little round one is from AC. I also have a few spare plugs, and my car came with the AIR system removed. I have a black plug with black wires going to it with a purple stripe which goes to that solenoid which may be what is pictured there. The gray one just floats around in my car as well. Runs great so I'm not concerned.

yea i deleted EGR...so I shouldn't need that plug then right? because that plug that fit was towards the back of the motor, and the EGR is under the TPI plenum towards that back...then the EGR itself had like a plug on it that looked like a O2 sensor plug am I right? so that top picture of that plug I shouldn't need if I deleted the EGR am I right?
Then we got those other 3 plugs and anybody know the scoop with the square plug that plugs into the tranny? where the wires go and whatnot...

okay....awesome
circle one - a/c...don't need it
the two prong one in the back is EGR...don't need it
Then the other 2...you said that black one with 2 black wires with purple stripes is the Smog right...so i don't need that
And the gray one you said isn't hooked up on yours, i'm still curious on what that does tho..
then for the tranny one I found it was the overdrive plug...turns out it should be wired to the computer and it was not hooked up all last summer...so i was going on 3 gears I guess...no wonder gas mileage sucked...

The four prong transmission plug is only supposed to have three wires coming out of it. That plug is for converter lockup.

Hmm the best thing to do would be to consult the good ole wiring diagram I will have to check mine and see where those go. I know one of them goes to the ecm one is ground and one is power I believe. I have a TCI lockup kit for mine because I got rid of my ECM and that junk. I gotta Holley 750 up top now. I will try and get some info for ya.

the 2 plugs with the green rubber seals, one goes to the coolant temp sensor on the front of the intake, the other goes to the TPS.( I think, I'll look at my car in a minute and check.)
OK, not TPS that a 3 prong plug. but one looks to go to the coolant temp.

i got both of those plugs hooked up i'm pretty sure...cuz the coolant temp sensor is on the driver side of the HSR intake and its fully vertical am i right? theres no way those other ones would reach...so i'm sure I got the right plug hooked up there...i'm pretty certain on the other plugs.....just looking for some info on how to hook up that other tranny plug...

alrighty, From what I have been looking at and from my previous knowledge I believe the hookup for the trans is:
3 wires, one black which is ground, one red (i think) which is wired to the ignition and the other goes to the ecm. The lockup has power all the time but isn't switched on until the ecm tells it to. Check the color of the wires that go to that plug and let me know.

I got blue, green, and purplish pink....then, I think its the green one, looks like it was cut, then a orange wire was attacted to it and wrapped in tape....so you can definately tell it has been messed with....also how many wires should come out of the plugs? because only 3 wires come out of mine...is the 4th slot on the plug used at all? it looks like i'm gonna need a new plug tho...

Hmmm, ya so there are supposed to be only 3 wires. The orange wire is most likely the ignition wire. I will have to look at the wiring diagram. Sorry for not getting to it I have had a long weekend. I will consult the diagram when I get a chance. I know that one is power one is ground and one goes to the ecm. I will find out which one is which.
