Found Some Good AIR Tube Plugs

I went to a salvage yard today and ganked one of the exhaust manifold AIR tube nuts. A visit to Home Depot gave me two interesting things:

1.) I never knew that Flare fitttings have different thread pitches than a standard bolt (imperial or metric).

2.) So I walked over to the Plumbing section and found this --

(I'll JB Weld them in tomorrow & let you guys know how they fit, but it appears perfect now.)

Also, on a side note: my new posi rear disc (even though it's a 10 bolt with the Delco iron calipers) is soooooooo much better than the factory stock drum open rear. I now have great rear brakes. Problem is the fronts have a bit of air in the lines. The cheapo bench bleeding kit that came with the new master cylinder couldn't seal properly against the ISO bubble flare hole threads and would suck air in with every de-stroke during bench bleeding. So I grabbed a set of master cylinder hard lines from another Camaro in the yard and will make a MUCH better positive-seal bench bleeding kit with the addition of some clear aquarium tubing.

Muahahahaha!

Looks like it's working so far. I was going to JB weld the plugs in because I thought they may be a bit loose. I was also worried that the JB Weld would ruin the O2 Sensor. The AIR tubes look to be Inverted Flare tube fittings and I thought the plugs I bought wouldn't fit because they didn't go deep enough to botto mout against the flare in the manifold. Turns out they fit great dry with no locking compound at all. I'll test these over some period of time and see if they're backing out from the heat, but I think it'll be good. If anyone else does this, be careful because it would be really easy to torque the fittings down until they snap off & you're stuck with a loud exhaust leak.

Now it'll be a joy to change the spark plugs...and all for $10.94 from Home Depot! Now that I have the room, I get to install my adjustable fan controller, posted here:

I've also been using 1/4" pipe plugs on my exhaust manifolds for close to a year now. I haven't had any problems with them, no leaks at all. Only thing I did was retighten them after 6 months.

I've been trying to tell people to use flare fittings since I did mine 2 yrs ago. Some people refuse to listen.

Will 1/4" pipe plugs work? I would imagine for a while, but it's only a matter of time before they start to leak. Flare plugs are the only thing that will work.

Maybe now people will start to listen?

Wow. I guess it was three years ago I did that.

Here's a link to a post where I took pics also.

Mine were IF fittings, but had a square head. I also just came in from the rain. I got the fan controller installed & tested that it does work, but is currently set to come on @ about 170*. I'll have to adjust it when it stops rainging.

Yea. I saw those at Menards not long after I changed mine out but IMO the ones I used looked cleaner after they were installed.

Regardless, you're right. You have to use flare plugs in order for it work right.

HAHA!

One fell out on the drive to work Thursday morning. With my stereo on, I didn't hear it all the way in. I remote started my car from across the parking lot when I went to leave for the day and spent the last 24 hours trying to find the source of my exhaust leak.

Well...lasted me 5 months without a problem. I'm gonna go replace it tomorrow when the engine's cool and torque all the other down again. I haven't touched it since I put them in...I meant to do a check after a month...
