going down the highway and my lights start flickering and almost go out...the car stays running fine but all the electrical like goes out and my charge light(idiot style) comes on and then goes off. then the car starting backfiring through the carb(i think) under acceleration.

Sounds like you have a loose ground somewhere. If the engine is backfiring like that the first ground I would check is the main ground off of the battery. Make sure that it is getting good connection.

Also check for a loose alternator belt or a bad alternator.

Check you ground wires, connection to the alt. and if you still cant find anything..you may want to have your alt. tested.

all connections appear to be solid but the connection from the negative battery post to the header is pretty cached in oil i believe from a leaking valve cover gasket. going to clean that and see if it helps...all else fails guess I will take that alternator off

Zero,

You can take your car to Advance Auto, Auto Zone, etc.. and they will test your alt. for you.
