peeling out?!

Yea this may sound liek a stupid question, but here goes: I recently purchased a '91 firebird, 5spd, V8. My old car would peel out easily, now I know this would be different, but it seems there is some sort of safety feature or something that won't let you. If you have any info on this or a way around it, let me know. Thanx! I would love to show off my car doing this with friends!

no problems getting them to spinn here i just have to roll on the throttle in 1st or 2nd. getting the meats to stick is another story. you might have better tires on the firebird. it is not a saftey feature that came on our cars. My RS would barely spinn when i bought it but after gears and alot of other stuff it would light them with out a problem.

If the old car had an open rear, then it would have had no problem doing a one wheel spin. The firebird probably has a posi rear, so you would have to break both tires free to spin them, and it takes a lot more power to do that.

it actualy does not take as much power as you would think to break both tires loose. it is more gearing than any thing. it does take a bit of power to break the rear loose when you have z-rated tires and posi. if that is the case with the firebird then you are going to need a minimum of 200 hp to do it. that is with the stock 3.08 gears. i assume it is a tbi car. there are alot of tricks you can do to get more power relativly cheap. just look at the tbi board.

Car: 1984 Camaro Berlinetta
Engine: LT1
Transmission: T56 6-speed
Axle/Gears: 4.11 LS1 Rear End
It really doesn't take much to get both tires spinning, Just a second on the gas / brake simultaneously...

My (black) 84 Berlinetta has a stock 110,000 mile LG4 305ci Motor (w/auto tranny) in it. It does have a few external motor mods: L69 air cleaner, TPI Manifolds, 3" Cat & Exhaust ect... The car has "Z" rated 16 inch tires and the stock 3.08 gear POSI disk.

(it took a few tries to get the picture to appear in the message !)

If you can't get a V-8 car with a Manual tranny to spin tire - you need to work on your driving skills ! Don't be affraid dude !!! Just run the motor up to around 3K and dump the clutch !!!!! It's that easy !

If you can't get a V8 5-speed to spin tires, then you really have nothing to "show off".

If I can get the tires to spin in my 1986 "not so great 2.8" firebird beater, I think you would easily do it w/ a 5.0.

I have a 89 GTA with an Auto trans, with no shiftkit, and I can launch that biatch off the line, and burn the stock 16 inch GTA wheels and meaty tires to the bone for about 300 feet. It hits second and breaks loose. With a 100,000 miles on the clock, and the only mods are exhaust & plugs. Work on it man! You can do it! I have faith in you!

Thanks (to most of you) for replying. I have almosted given up, but didn't. I realized I just wasn't dropping the clutch fast enough to spin 'em. My old car was no problem and this one just threw my off a little. No problem doing it now. Thanx!

92 RS TBI stock rear Brand new Comp T/A 245/50/zr16's manual tranny and I couldn't take off from the line without rubber on the road for atleast a foot or two .... just raise your rpm to 2500-3000 and you can even slip the clutch and still spin them .... but in an auto like I have now it just helps to have a 350 pushing to the rear for that tire smoking we all look for

I think you have a lack of power

I have the opposite problem with mine....too much throttle and you can't even see the back of my car thru all the smoke

I mean you really need to make an effort to keep them from spinning. Just turning corners my tires chirp on the 1-2 shift.

Gotta love the low end torque of TPI.
