How much HP to get into 12's...
Hey everyone,
I know different factors will effect how much hp you need to get to a certian ET.... But in general, how many horses should I am for in my new motor if I want to be in the 12's?
My car is a 91 RS

For a car that weighs what one of these does (3500 lbs more or less), assuming it hooks and has reasonable gears (3.42 or 3.73 typically), then about 400 HP at the crank, or 325 at the wheels, should get it to about 12.99.

again........
my car went a 12.45@108 on 275whp with a 1.69 60 foot.
fastest bolt-on only ls1 went a 10.96@121 with only 331whp.
a mustang my brother had a few years ago went 12.91@103 with 246whp.
typical auto ls1's with a 3500-3800 converter, headers and exhaust, lid, and very few suspension mods run 11.90's with 330-345whp with 1.5 60 foots.
our old shop car(a 99 ls1 z28) went a 12.32 full weight with only 3.73's a 3500 converter, and lakewood control arms. it made 292whp.
if you can get a car to hook really well, then you only need about 260whp to hit 12's, more or less depending on the weight.
but most people on this site believe this is not possible and most of them have not tryed to run the fastest they can on the smallest amount of power. they also have never really had a car that 60 footed. so dont let them tell you you have to have 325whp to run a 12.99, i went a 1/2 a second faster with 50 less whp.

Lot of it is in the shortime. Optimizing a car to hook is so important. I can't get any better than a 2.0 60 ft on street tires with a T56 and 4:10's but I trap at 110 MPH with 321 RWHP. With a good tire and proper suspension setup, should be easily into the low 12's high 11's. The problem is if I put a decent tire on it, it's gonna blow up the rear end and clutch.

Like Halfinch said, a lot of it is how hard you can launch it. If you can make it hook and pull like a freight train outta the hole it doesn't take very much HP at all. About 300-325 real engine HP is what it takes in a typical 3rd gen pushed by a 350ci SBC. On street tires with no traction, low-stall converter and less-than-optimal gearing it can easily take 400HP to hit the same ET.

You can get a 3500lb thirdgen into the 12's may only require 300hp; on the other hand a few people with 400hp haven't done it.
A lot depends on the launch, gears, transmission (auto or manual), tires, weight......

It doesn't take anywhere near 325 rwhp if the rest of the car is setup right. If I did suspension, gears, converter, and a few other things to my car, it would hit 12.9 VERY easily, and it's prob puttin' down 270 or so to the rear wheels.

I should be good then. I am installing a
T56 with a SPEC Stage 2 Clutch
Spohn Rear suspension
3.73 or 4.11 Gears
We will just have to see how long my rear lasts?
