New engine startup - updated NEED HELP!

I'm starting up my 335 stroker for the first time.

I have found that if I pump the gas I can get it to run (rough) but if I let it drop under 1500 rpm or so it dies. The headers are smokeing too. Not sure if it is something burning off or if they are getting really hot. I thought I might have the timeing 180 off but I set it to TDC with a compression tester and set the distrib to #1 so I really don't think thats the problem. Any ideas? Its the stock Q-jet carb. Fuel pump is new.

New note: tried it again and got it to run for about a min. Oil pressure was off the scale... what could cause that?

Retarded timing, lean carb/FI settings.

As to the oil gauge reading: nice high oil pressure will do that. Count your blessings.

I'm not saying this is whats wrong with your engine but I've seen a engine do that before, it would start but only run at high idle, had over 100 lb. oil pressure, he took the engine apart and discovered the parts place had given him .002 undersize bearings on the rods and mains, it would turn over ok on the engine stand but when it was running it was very tight, this is why you always check clearance, but he didn't, he polished the crank and put the right bearings in and it ran great then with 60 lb. pressure.
And as for what RB83L69 said, I thought nice high oil pressure was good too untill my old Dodge twisted the oil pump shaft off after running 80 to 100 lb. for years.

Hmmm... I hope thats not it... I just spent about $2000 for a shop to build it... The pressure is pegged so I think I'm going to try changing the sending unit... It was working before though. The more I run it the better it seems to run. I'm still hopeing I just didn't get all the old gas out. The water pump housing split on me so now I'm replaceing that.. ARGH.. will it never end...
