I have a complete 10bolt with new shoes and drums. It has a 2.73 posi that was still working when I pulled it for a 9bolt disc brake conversion. It just needs a pinion seal.

YOu are too far from Texas to want this rear end so I can't imagine I'd be killing a sale.

On that note....

The reason a pinion seal leaks:

It could be worn out but I haven't seen one. The crush collar could be crushed more than it should be due to hard launches or someone who don't know how to drive. Both leads to crushing the crush collar more and makes the preload on the pinion lose. Being lose causes it to wobble screwing up the gears and the pinion seal in the process.

Many folks will have replaced their pinion seal only to find that it will leak again. Some will blame it on the seal or the person that installed it. It's not, just a bandaid fix. Gears need to be set up again to fix it right including a new crush collar. New crush collar is the key. I always like a new pinion bearing too, the arbor press can distort it if used repeatedly. Make sure the gears are lined up with the same teeth or you will introduce gear whine.

It might leak because the car sat for about 8 years without being moved. And the previous owner made no preperations for storage. Ie no more clearcoat and all of the fuel system had to be replaced...hence the user id.

Sitting for that long could do it too as well as making all the otherseals leak too. On the plus side of that, you have a low millage car. Should be ok long as it hasn't been stored in a field or something with grass growing up under it or the wheels sinking into the soil. That could make baby jeezus cry.

Would be easier if you described what you hear. Only on acceleration, crusing at a certain speed or when you take your foot off the gas pedal. All important factors.

Well I cant tell you what speed as my speedo is not or has never been in working conditions.... It is mostly on deceleration... and sometimes when i am crusing rite along.... not REAL REAL loud but you can hear some sort of whine for sure....

Sounds like a gear problem.

How loud? Barely noticeable so that just you notice it or really loud? Passengers mention it to you?

Count the bolts on the diff cover. 10 or the more rare 9 bolt was stock on third gen cars.

It should be ok in the short term. In the long term the humming is really vibration and will wear the bearings faster than normal.

I have it at a steady cruse in my 98 which I switched from 3:42's to 4:10's. Two sets of gears and several installs and it is not right still. Measured correctly all times, watched it myself but it is not right. Same rear esentially as a 3rd gen. Most of the parts fit.
