quiet knock from the....distributor??

When the engine on my car (which is a 305 carbed with and hei distributor with the coil on the cap) i can hear a quiet (but noticable) knock from the distributor i think. We thought it was the rockers too loose ( cuz we just got the engine running and forgot to adjust them) so we adjusted them but still hear a small know. Even though the rockers did take a little bit of the chatter away. I am just wondering if any one else has ever had this sound come from the distributor. Any help will be nice???

mods:3in. exhaust pipe straight from the headers to a glasspack, edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold, edelbrock performer 600cfm elec. choke carb, dynomax headers, no ac and edelbrock signature chrome valve covers and a edelbrock pro flo air cleaner. oh yeah and lots of chrome stuff.

future mods:msd 6al, hei upgrade, and my wolverine cam to be installed, and march underdrive pulleys and a bumpin stereo.

first thing i thought of was a spark arcing making it sound like a tick. is the cap, rotor, and wires good?

cap, rotor, and wires have about 50 miles on them. It is not arc though i know what that sounds like. I am hoping it is not a rod knock. thanx for that advice though.

This sounds really simple and ridiculous, but it happened to me when I had my tranny rebuilt. Check to make sure that the dist. cap is on the dist straight, as in not higher at one point than another. I got my car back from the shop with a scary knocking noise, but it ran just fine. When they took the trans out, the engine must have rocked back and pushed the cap off slightly, and the rotor was tapping the cap.
