"Peanut Cam" Questions
Why is it called the Peanut Cam?
What is its power range?
Tell me all you know about it. On another forum some guys were calling the peanut cam "a myth."
What is a good cam to replace it with on my stock LG4? I want just as smooth an idle as I have right now guys, but more horsepower in the off-idle to 4500rpm range. I don't want any erratic idling.
Thanks a bunch

A Comp XE256H would probably do pretty good. 212/218 @ .050, .447/.454 lift, 110 LSA. Comp says it makes power from 1000 to 5200 RPM.

It is not a myth.
All LG4s got it, among various other engine options that are hotly debated. It is the most pitiful cam GM has ever forced onto an unsuspecting public as far as I know, even worse than the .390/.410 POS that was partly responsible for 165 HP 350s in the 70s. Its specs are in the tech section of this website.
The Comp XE256 is a popular choice for that motor. However, the exhaust is so bad, about as bad as the cam in fact, that just changing out the cam will have relatively little effect. I strongly recommend an exhaust system all the way from the heads to the street, otherwise you won't get anywhere near the full benefit of the cam. When you get an exhaust, do it all at once, and DON'T get the direct LG4 replacement, because if it bolts up to the stock LG4 exhaust, it has to be the little weenie pipe sizes that the stock one os made of. Get a whole exhaust for a L69 or TPI car; headers, cat, and cat-back.
