What can I do with 1.7:1 Crane Roller Rockers?
I have an 88 IROC, 350 TPI and a friend of mine gave me a complete set of Crane Roller Rockers, 1.7:1 ratio, for helping him out on that 454 I posted about yesterday. I also hooked up an A/C unit in his shop ... hehe.
So what do I need to do to make these work? I'm thinking lower the preload to 1/4 turn, but there's probably something else. ECM wise. Any ideas?
What will this do for performance? Higher lift, but same duration?
Thanks.

Right: higher lift, essentially the same duration, maybe a couple of more degrees at .050" but not really significant.
You don't have to change the preload. You will almost certainly have to change your valve springs, especially if they are the stock ones. If they are not of the "self-aligning" design, you will have to put screw-in studs and guide plates which isn't a bad idea anyway.
I wasn't aware that stud-mounted 1.7 rockers were avaliable for the SBC... are these in fact for small blocks, or are they big block ones?

1.7's are available in stud mount, but not common at all. Chances are they are big block ones. Its not impossible to use them, but I am pretty sure you have to relocate the rocker studs to do so. In that case, sell them and buy the right ones for your engine. Unless you have some outstanding heads chances are the extra lift isn't going to help you out alot. You would probably be better of with 1.5 or 1.6 anyways.

I don't know if they are for SBC's ... but he gave them to be because they wouldn't work on his 454's ... hence is why he gave them to me. He thought he bought some for his 454's in his boat, but they weren't BBC rollers. I have two sets really. He's got two 454's ... so I only plan on using one
I'll be shopping a little this weeks for valve train parts so any input would be good.
Here's what's stamped on them. At the pushrod end there is "1.7" in one side and "13" on the right side. On the valve stem end, there's "12-82" then right underneath there's "CRANE". They are gold in color.
Hope this helps. If they don't work, I may look into selling them.
