Any better moving the MAF closer to the air filter to read cooler air?

Any better moving the MAF closer to the air filter to read cooler air?

I am putting a custom ram air setup on my 88 GTA. I am running it under the car to a K&N Cone Filter. I was just curious if it would be better to move it closer to the air filter or leave it in the factory spot right near the radiator?

I am taking mine up to Tri-State Muffler to get a piece of 3" Aluminum exhaust pipe custom bent to run underneath of the car with some sort of scoop. It will be pretty sweet, hopefully it will help.

There'd be no merit to having the MAF read colder air. There is merit to keeping the MAF as close as possible to the TB, otherwise you are introducing more lag between when the engine starts pulling air, and when the MAF sees the increase.

A hint to you guys looking to build your own air intake system.

Exhaust pipe is measured on the outside of the tubing.

PVC (and water pipe) is measured on the inside.

Therefore - a 3" exhaust pipe ends up being about 1/4" smaller inside than PVC.

Just a free "tip".

The plastic pipe is 3.5" o.d. anyway, so you may as well use 3.5" exhaust pipe with rubber reducers at the MAF. Here's what K&N had to say about intake pipe diameter:

"Dear customer,
Engine size and max RPM is what determines flow rate. The bigger the motor and the faster it turns, the more air it needs. On a small block I would go no bigger than 3.5" to increase velocity (air speed) and reduce turbulence.
Thanks for asking, Rick"
