how to check for a collapsed hydraulic lifter?.......

Hey all. I have a loud RATTLE, not tick when the engine is completely warm (kinda beat on her too hard at the dragstrip ). The consensus seems to be that it's some sort of valvetrain noise. What I want to know is how can I check for a collapsed lifter? Can I check with just the valvecovers off? I plan on changing the intake. Is there anything visual to look for on the lifter? My engine is still like new, so I don't want to replace the cam and ALL the lifters (big $$$ in Canada). I just want to be POSITIVE I change the right lifter before I put the engine back together..

Thanks

pull the valve cover and look for a rocker that isn't getting oiled, not moving up and down as much as the others.

I figured that. Only thing is it does when COMPLETELY warm and at around 2000 RPM. So with a high yolume oil pump it's going to be hard to see which one isn't getting oil/ or loose. Know anything to check visisual on the lifter? Like I said, jusy want to be 110% I get the right one...

Hey, I had the same problem on a Nova once. Couldn't figure out which lifter was making the noise. While adjusting the valves (engine hot and running) I found it. While tightening nut on top of rocker arm the noise went away and then slowly returned. I guess you'll still have to remove the intake once you find it, to replace it anyway.
