How is the LT4 hot cam in a carbed 350?
I've got a ZZ4 motor and am really considering the LT4 cam as a cheap cam upgrade. Right now I have a 670cfm Holley but might upgrade to a 750DP.
Just wondering what you guys with hot cams in carbed 350s thought of the power gain. Was it substantial? Was it still pretty streetable?
Thanks.

a Hotcam in a carbed motor will run pretty good...its a relitivly small cam so it will be very streetable..but thats more of your own personall definition of streetable...i know guys that run carbed 350's with a Gm 847...(236/242 .550/.572) or close to that and they drive them everyday..so a hotcam with 218/228 will be like a stock cam to them...my own cam 224/230 i think is more then streetable...nice lumpy idle (soundclip in my sig) its got real nice off idle power and REALLY comes alive after 2,500...
With the heads your using which are basically stock vette L98 heads youll make 375 ponies or so...

I just got mine running 2 nights ago, and it's a completely fresh engine so I haven't put my foot in it yet. I can say the idle is noticable but not harsh. I could easily live with it all day every day. I also have new rubber motor mounts with a poly trans mount. It does sound real good though IMHO. Off idle response is excellent also.

I think that the LT4 hotcam would work well w/ a carb. Although the Duration at .050" looks small, it's relatively large everywhere else.....you can tell this by the RPM range. Most dyno charts I have seen w/ the Hotcam have peak power @ 6200-6500 rpm's. Also I have been told that even though the lift is even kinda small, that for a mild engine it's way to big w/ EFI. I know you are running a carb w/ it, so that will be easier to live with, but I noticed that everyone is acting like its a tiny cam, but in reality its fairly aggressive, and powerful. Anyways, My friend had that cam in his 69 camaro, it was a stock 95 LT1 bottom end, ported heads, carb intake, Holley 3310.....it ran very well, and actually suprised alot of people, and sounded pretty mild.....that car ran 11's. I think you would be happy w/ it!

It's very streetable, I have it in mine. Idles fine at 750 with a little bit of a lope. I think you're making a mistake going to a 750, though. My car came with a 750 and I just got a 600 to replace it because of a massive off idle bog which I believe is caused by the big carb. I'll be swapping them next weekend. By Holley's formula, a 350 revving to 6k rpm with an 80% volumetric efficiency only needs 486cfm.
(350*6000/3456)*.80=486
(350*6000/3456)*.80=486

Considering the cam was designed as un upgrade for LT4 Vettes I think it'll do just fine with EFI. I don't think there's such thing as too big for EFI anyway, it's just that once you get to a big enough cam you have to start tuning the ECM.

Sorry for the confusion....I ment for TPI setups, its really small for EFI in general, however for a mild TPI setup it is big. It makes power alot further in the RPM range. It was designed for LT4 vettes, which have different style intakes.....that make power at much higher rpms than TPI.
