Ok my car wont start. Now I first replaced the solinoid. I installed it and was able to start the engine twice. After that i started making a clicking noise. Then i replaced the starter and was able to get it to start once. After that it was back to making a clicking noise(sounds lk the pinion just slaping the flywheel and getting stuck in it) I constantly have my battery charging and at a high level. What could the prob be. Its a 86 Iroc 305 TPi

Ok the battery is fine it has 12.45 volts while cranking. By charging at a high rate i mean i have my battery charger on it all the time when im not cranking. Also what do you mean by wires? Are their any inline fuses, relays or anything that can be sending to much power to the starter?

if it clicks once when you turn the key then the pinion probably is hitting the flywheel. just jack it up, unplug coil wire and have someone turn the key while you watch the starter. if it is hitting the flywheel then all you need are shims. if that is it just add shims until it doesnt hit the flywheel. if you add too many the starter wheel make a LOUD noise when you try to crank it.

But it doesnt make sense that i have to shim it. I put the new starter in with out shims and it worked once to start it.

Is clicking noise from the solenoid not engaging starter or gear coming out and hitting flywheel? Jack up car and with help from a friend to crank it over see if gear is coming out of starter and hitting flywheel or if solenoid is just clicking. Isolate problem and post results.

Ok i went out and took off the inspection cover. I had my sister crank it. The pinion is suck on the flywheel.

You will probably need 2 or 3 shims to get it off. The right way to shim is to pull gear out and have a .035" to .50" clearance (i.e. fat paper clip). I would put in 2 to start and see where you are at. If it starts but makes noise, add another. My old TCI mini-starter made a lot of noise but started engine, 2 shims fixed it. Hope this helps.

On sunday, try local auto parts store. Can definitely get them at the dealer, but call first because if special order come in box of 20.
When you go to install, remove outer bolt.
Loosen inner bolt.
Insert shim(s).
Insert outer bolt, tighten both, and see what happens.
Good luck!!

ok i went out and got shims after chruch. I then shimed it .015 at a time. i started with .015 didnt work, .03 didnt work, .045 dindnt work, out to .60 and didnt work, out to .75 didnt work from their i stioped b/c thats way to far form what the instructions say that .02 to .06 is what you want. So what could it be. I noticed that when i turn the key off of crank i get this weired murmering sound coming form something around the engine.

it didnt hit the flywheel after .015 shim but the pinion would return to the housing. so i kept going and no luck. There was a straing murming coming from the engine after i took it off crank. It sounded lk something rechargin or reseting.

I really think its a wireing problem or something b/c this all started after i tried craking it with the battery charger on and a timing light on the battery. Im about to call it quits b/c im getting a 350 from efbsupply.
