Relieving Fuel Pressure

Ok when relieving the fuel pressure it says to unplug the fuel pump fuse and let the car run until it dies. How long does the car usually run for? The car is an 87 Z with 5.0 tpi. We let it run for like 6 minutes and it still didnt shut off?

Huh? Your car ran for 6 minutes with no fuel pump? I can't imagine.

Last time I replaced my fuel filter, I didn't bother to relieve the pressure. I did open the gas cap to vent the tank to atmosphere, but then in the fuel lines I just put a catch pan under the old filter, loosened the fittings and let it drip for a minute. I lost about half a cup or so of gas, no biggie.

Well that is what the Chiltons manual says to pull the fuel pump fuse and then start it up and then its supposed to run till its out of gas. I take the gas cap off too. I was just wondering why the car does not die since the fuse is not in.

If you have a carb'd engine, its probably running off the mechanical pump. Some cars have both, like the carb'd cars.

All I do is take off the gas cap, and thats enough... works every time.

Uhh Adam, he says its a TPI engine. Not quite a carb setup

I am going to assume you are pulling the under-dash fuse, right? I'm with Tremo, not certain how it ran for 6 minutes. Maybe, just maybe, you yanked the wrong fuse?

Yes the under dash fuse. I am pretty sure I am pulling the right one. Its the 20 rated fuse that says fan FP right?

Try popping the hood and looking near the battery/coolant overflow tank. There should be a 20a inline fuse there that protects the pump relay. Yank that fuse.

Might have to yank/disable/unplug the oil pressure switch as well.

The fuse under the dash doesn't do anything because the oil sending unit also sends current to the fuel pump over a certain psi. So it needs to be the relay in the engine compartment in the front right corner (well that's where it is on mine)

with my old RS, i tried to change the fuel filter and i pulled the fuse under the dash and it ran forever idling.. like ****... but it never died lol

with the iroc, i just do like tremo and pull the gas cap, and break lose the line for the filter and let it drain.

yeah lol, for the time we let it run it idle'd crappy but never quite died. So after the 5 min or so we just shut it off and took the gas cap off. Guess I know how to properly do it now. Wish the Chiltons and Haynes manual would have said that

The Chiltons does, I just don't think it's all that specific when it comes to tell you what fuse it's talking about.

I had the same thing happen when I went to replace my fuel filter. I idled real rough for about a 5 min. So I took out the other fuse below the fuel pump one (for the other injector). Then it finally died due to lack of fuel.
