Oil, oil additives and filters--Info inside...

These are some links on oil, additives, and oil filters. Please post some more links and opinions. If I get enough links and good info, I plan on posting all of it on my web site. Maybe thirdgen.org should get a nice tech article put together...

A/C filters are good as well

This is the old oil filter study(it hasn't been updated for over a year)

I cut up one of those fram filters with teflon inside a couple days ago, it was pretty flimsy and that teflon didn't do much good all over my workbench. What do you guys think of prolong? What is in it?

ProLong in trouble

The manufacturers of the ProLong engine additive have been dealt a smack in the face
by a Consumer Reports Magazine report into their product. CR attempted to reproduce
the "no oil" test where all the oil was drained out of an engine which had been treated
with ProLong, and then the engine was run. CR managed a maximum of 13 seconds running
out of each of two engine before they seized up, welding the pistons to the barrels.
The case is being brought to a Federal Commision for prosecution for false
advertising claims. You can subscribe to the online version of Consumer Reports here for a minimal fee, and read all about it in their October 1998
features.

And I will laugh my a$$ off when ProLongs attorney brings in an engine and runs it withou oil, it certainly will run more than 13 seconds, with or without ProLong, unless excessive abuse is thrown it's way, or they do not start the engine right after shut-off as in the commercial, which is why that trick works.

Briggs & Stratton actually did one of their own "Prolong-type" tests. The engien that had no Prolong with only mineral oil before it was drained actually suffered less measurable and quantifyable damage and wear. Their test results would tend to indicate that Prolong actually causes wear and should be avoided at all costs.

The sky gets more cloudy by the minute. I guess the ancient Romans were right (Caveat Emptor), and the "modern Greeks" aren't far off either...
