Choke Light = Alternator Problem
Hello all.
I just bought a 1982 Trans Am 5.0 L, H engine, with 39K miles.
It came with the Pontiac Firebird Owners Manual and a bunch of Ziebart receipts(the body is mint).
While starting it up and running it, I noticed the "choke warning" light staying on. Sometimes it would flicker.
So, I did a search of all choke light posts here and came to the conclusion it was an alternator problem.
I then checked the Manual, and on page 2C-3 under the Choke Warning Light section, it states "If the light does not go out after the engine is running, a generator circuit problem is indicated".
Thought some doubters might want to know,
Thanks,
Joe

Your choke light and related circuitry should be a lot like this:
It is possible that the problem coudl be with the charging system, choke relay coil, fuse, choke heater element, or wiring. Most people see the CHOKE lamp and completely disregard the charging system as a possible problem.

I had the same problem with my 82 z-28, turned out that my alternator had a bad regulator in it. I took it out and had it rebuilt and also needed to put a new terminal on the wire that hooks to the choke as well. It was pretty much a mess from all the years of abuse and had some fraying. That took care of the problems, so be sure to check that terminal out that plugs into the choke..
