Sounds like someone put in a gear drive while I wasn't looking!

My car has a non lockup 700r4 with a neal chance racing converter in it. Tonight I drove my car around for a while and into someones house for about an hour and a half. I came back out and get in my car, put it in reverse and I hear a whining sound. I thought that it was my richmond gears making some noise but it wasn't. I put it in drive and all the other gears and I still hear it. It sounds like a gear drive whining. I know it's not the rearend because I can hear it when it is stopped. I checked the tranny fluid and it looks good.

What is going on? It sounds really bad.

it might of knocked your tranny out of whack from driving into someones house. I would be more worried about that man!! what happened?

OOPS! I went into someones house but I drove the car to the house. It's really late here and I am very tired. Sorry.

Have you replaced any parts? I remember installing a rebuilt water pump on my car, and the thing would whine. A friend of mine thought I had a blower under the hood. I've never had a water pump do that. It was weird.

Does the sound occur only in reverse? Does the sound increase with RPM's? Once, I had to back up rather quickly and the tranny (700R4) whined. It doesn't make the sound when going slow in reverse, though. Were you reversing quicker than you usually do?

I just re-read your post. I only heard my tranny whine going quickly in reverse. I'm not sure what it would be since you hear the sound in the other gears and while stationary. I would've guessed fluid level, but you already checked. Has the trans filter ever been replaced?

Check EXACTLY where the sound is coming. A bad/dying alternator often makes a whining sound. How is your voltage?

It does increase with RPM's. I will check my alternator when I get back home later.

I had an alternator that sounded like a supercharger before burning up.

my altinator sounded liek that im my old IROC, i put some grease on whe rear berring from th eoutside and it would quiet down a bit for liek 2 days.

try this remove all the belts from the accesories then start the car for like a minute just enough to see if you hear the wine, if yo uhear it its not any of the accesories and its either a gear drive or a internal problem

Yeah check your alternator, I've had the diodes go out twice in mine, it would still charge some but sounded like I had a superchager under the hood, I had it fixed at a starter repair shop once for $40, the second time it went out I put in a IceBerg conversion kit with a back housing that has cooling fins on it and I have not had any more problems with it in 100,000 miles.
