Vss
Went to the part store and asked for a new VSS and they told me they had different kinds and that i need the model number off the old one. Problem is I dont have time to swap it out right now and they didn't have any in stock so i have to order it. Anyone know which VSS a 91 pontiac firebird 3.1L has? Or are the people at the parts store full of it and it doesn't matter?

Car: yy wife, crazy.
Engine: 350, Vortecs, 650DP
Transmission: TH-350
Axle/Gears: 8.5", 3.42
I went to www.RockAuto.com and looked it up.
Look under Pontiac:Firebird:3.1L:Transmission:Speed Sensor
It looks like they're based on the RPO code the car has. Hopefully you have the RPO sheet.
Look for one of these.
D8E : SENSOR, VEH SPD
D8N : SENSOR, VEH SPD
D8F : SENSOR, VEH SPD
D8I : SENSOR, VEH SPD
D8G : SENSOR, VEH SPD
D8M : SENSOR, VEH SPD
Unable to locate code F8N in our database!
That's the results I got from our RPO Decoder here at www.ThirdGen.org
Basically it's one of 3 different sensors, based on the RPO code.

I dont have the RPO sheet. Unless its in a haynes or chilton manual somewhere. What does RPO stand for anyway? I am not familiar with it. Thanks for the quick reply trickster!

Nope its not there. I got bigger fish to fry then a VSS right now though.
About 2 months after my engine rebuild and after a great running car suddenly out of the blue I get the feeling that my car is going to break down and leave me stranded somewhere. Its getting harder to start day by day. And today on the way home from work while accelerating I got a massive drop in rpms to the point where it almost died and then it surged back up and ran fine all the way home. I'm stumped
Starting to think about finacning a new car this ones giving me nothing but problems.
