When I bought my car it didn't have OD, and I always got around 14 mpg, now I just got my tranny rebuilt and after calculating for the first time I am getting about 16mpg, does this seem to be right, I was hoping for around 18mpg.

Depends on the type of driving. If it's stop and go city driving, thats probably correct. If you're looking at mostly freeway then you're mpg should have gone up a little more I'd think.

With 2.73 gears, you won't gain much mileage because 2.73's without overdrive isn't that bad of a combination. If you had 3.73's, your mileage increase would be larger(3.73's without overdrive will get you 3000rpm at 60mph). Gear ratio can only help so much. If you swapped in 3.08's or 3.23, you would get about the same mileage with overdrive.
...I can get 20mpg w/3.73's and overdrive if I'm really nice.
