I'm f****d! Bellhousing won't bolt on to engine and I can't drop the motor in, HELP!

Ok, I tried to drop the motor in today, got the engine bay ready for it and everything. Got the flywheel, clutch, etc on and when I go to put the bellhousing on tada, it won't fit. Now, I bought the bellhousing off of ebay from another 89 V8 5 speed. The only thing that I can think of is that the engine is out of a 72 pickup/van. I thought that all small blocks were the same dimensions. I thought that the V8 5 speed bellhousing would fit on any old small blocks except for the LT1/LS1? Now I'm at a stop point and I'm kinda pissed cause I cant drop the motor in and hook the drivetrain up. Is it possible that the bellhousing that I got was for a V6? I don't ahve a digital camera or anythig like that to put a picture on here to show you what I mean. Can anybody show me a webpage with the bellhousing dimensions, or came some one take a pic of their bellhousing. Thanks for your help in this, Paul Moore

EDIT: Topic line editied for content.

Probably not a V8 bellhousing.

Chevy V8 bell housings all bolt up to all Chevy V8s, up until the LS1; and even those aren't too much different. Until recently, I had a 91 one bolted to a 73 model 400 in my 83 car.

I'd be inclined to agree with ME, you got something other than a Chevy V8 BH.

heres a quick check ...get a tape measure and measure from the inside of one hole to the inside of another hole directly accross from it on the bellhousing then do the same where it should mount on the engine ......

What a day! The damn things fits fine. I was trying to put it on incorrectly. The topmost bolt hole on the block threw me off because it is threaded and there is no provisons for that hole on the bellhousing. Thankfully, it was something simple ie my own stupidity. I was working out in the sun for a few hours and came inside when it happened, had a cold drink of water, and when I went back out I just looked at it again and I was like I'm such an idiot! But thanks for looking out for me guys, I really appreciate it. Paul Moore

hehehe looks like you tried to bolt it to the wiring harness bolt hole..

ya know.. i bought a ratching 9/16ths wrench to get to those top bolts on the bell housing.. doing it from the top.. there is not much room.. and when patience is low.. quarter turns of a regular wrnech does not do the trick if you know what I mean...
