4" stroke 6" rod in a 400 block?
I've heard it can be done, but I haven't heard what is required to do it.
What kind of machine work to the block is required?
Is this one of those situations where you have to go with a different cam diameter?
Can you do it with H-beams?
Can you do it with a static compression of 8.5:1 or lower (wanna go Supercharged)?

Axle/Gears: 3.73 posi with spacer
It will require pistons with a 1" compression height. Good luck with that. It will be almost impossible to do and won't last a week on the street.

What should be changed in this setup?
The objective was to reduce the side thrust loads (?) and increase the stroke. If I have to give up one or the other (or lower levels of both) what would be recommended?

Use a shorter rod, about the max you can go is 5.85" rod. Even that is pushing it. If you really want to build a 6" rod 4" stroke engine you need a tall deck block. They are .300" taller.

There's one that's .5" taller too.
Those tall deck blocks also have the pan rails spread apart for additional clearance there, and the cam is raised up for clearance.
All SBC builders should aspire to have one.

I would not try it with a factory block. Dart highdeck.
The tall deck dart 454 smallblock hotrod did (dec 2003) made 584ft/lbs at 4100 and 536hp at 5700 with the comp XE294 hydroller. Be prepared to spend close to 2K on a good head.
