car won't start when hot

My wife has an 88 2.8 camaro with an auto and after a long trip or driving a while when the car is shut off it won't start back up, no turning no clicking no nothing-thought it might be the neutral safety switch but it still won't start in neutral. after about 30min it will start like nothing was wrong this is a delima due to the fact that the car makes long trips weekly 300mi rnd trip.

It has a new starter (GM not reman) and a new batterie as well as new ignition and everything else for that matter, just not a new neutral.

I have always been a ford and mopar guy but my wife just loves camaros and loves her car, it is in great shape. I am now a chevy guy and it is a great car I just don't know a whole lot about it and I know a whole lot less about newer electrical (computer)cars.

You said it has new ignition. Did you replace the ignition module itself? I know problems with that show up once the motor is warm/hot.

Then again, I think the starter should at least be trying to turn it over if this were the case.

I'd say check a ground and check all of the connections from the battery/alt to the starter. I believe there is a heavy purple wire that enables the starter motor. It runs down in front of and along the side of the passenger head and to the starter motor if I remember right. Now, this is on the V8s, so I don't know if the starter stuff is any different on the V6, but I was looking at one today in the junkyard (though not closely) and it looks somewhat similar on the side..

I'm going to call heatsoak on this one

It's a combination of things. Your motor wants to start up at like 1200RPM because it's already hot.... and the starter has been heat soaked, I'll explain.

When the y-pipe gets hot and it gets too close to the starter it will seep heat onto the starter, now i know there have been countless posts on this, and a for "heat soaked starter" will yeild you plenty of results and five7kid or stekman or ede or vader or RB, or any other very competent source can explain better than I.

What I suggest you do to fix the problem, you have a couple choices....

A) smaller starter, i am unsure as to the V6 starters, i know you can get an lt1 starter for the V8 and that works wonders.

B) remote start solenoid... this is a bit cheaper, it will have the starter over-come heatsoak (dont ask how I cant explain it properly enough )

C) heat blanket around the starter... this doesnt always work and it can look nasty on a show-car, also, not many people have had luck with it, but the idea is a good one atleast.

D) re-gear your starter... this is a much more expensive approach to it.

personally if i were you, I'd look into a remote start solenoid.... if you go to your local auto parts store and ask them for one, they should be able to hook you up with the goods It might be about 50 - 150 dollars, I really have no idea on the V6's, but i dont think they should differ...

Welcome to the board btw
