How to make L69 305 HO run with the L98s? Possible? General Info on L69s?
I just bought myself a Camaro with a low mileage 1987 L69 305 HO. Perfectly stock. I want it to make more power but I have been around TPI's for so long I have forgot what to do to upgrade the L69. I would like it to run with a stock L98, is this possible or is the TPI's torque too much for the little L69?
Also, I have heard that the 87+ L69 motors came with 'FastBurn' heads? Is this true? What exactly are they and how much better are they over a typical stock head?
I bought the car for a project to see if I can make the L69 run with a stock L98 AND GET BETTER GAS MILEAGE
I would greatly appreciate any useful or interesting info on the L69's.
Thanks

Stock everthing except what you see in signature. What I was always suprised with is
the fact I still have the all stock factory
exhaust(except gutted cat). Al driveshaft
bolted right in (from JamesC on this board).
Take a look at my previous post on the Drag
racing forum.

The L69 is a hell of an engine. I've seen several in the very low 14's with free mods, and very high 13's with relatively little mods, which is more than enough to outrun a stock L98. i wish like hell i had your car man, it sounds like a sweet deal. Sorry im not sure on the fastburn heads, or what exactly is nessesary to get them to go, so i guess this was of little to no help to you huh.... owell, good luck anyways...

You might be mistaking swirl port heads with GM's new fastburn aluminum heads. You probably have an LG4 not the L69.

my L69 has a few goodies that could possibly make it run with the stock L98's (if any are still stock) i started with the heads port&polished, milled and lathed, port matched to the intake, performer rpm and 600 edelbrock carb #1405, 14x3 open element w/ K&N filter, comp cams 262XE and lifters with hardened pushrods and magnum tip rockers. fluidampr harmonic balancer and march underdrive pulleys. hoping its a low 14 second car.

Yep I have verified that the 87 + 88 Monte SS with the L69 DID come with 'Fast Burn' heads! They said that the Spark Plug is closer to the intake side of the combustion chamber resulting in more power, but my question is to you, how much more would you think?

Well I can't give you any times yet but I know I'm around 325 - 350hp with my L69.. Should have it running in a week or two. I stroked it to 335, have S/R torquer heads, edelbrock intake, 262XE cam, Edelbrock TES headers, hooker catback, rebuilt Q-Jet, Roller rockers, no ac, TransGo shiftkit, Vigilante 2800 stall TC, Hotchkis LCA's panhard, springs, KYB shocks, PST bushings all around, Alston subframes, wonderbar probably forgot some stuff.. I'm hopeing to run mid to low 13's... 12's would be great but not counting on it...

The 87-88 Monte Carlo heads aren't the same thing as the "Fast Burn" heads. AFAIK they're nothing special, except for being centerbolt and set up for self-aligning rockers. They might be the same as the TPI heads of those years but I don't know the casting #s. My late brother's 87 wasn't even a roller cam.
A stock L69 5-speed runs pretty close to a stock L98 auto. A set of headers, a little head port work, and a better cam would be the easiest ways to improve it. There should be a good 40 or 50 HP available there.
The factory exhaust, like 84 says, is not too bad. SLP and Edelbrock headers will bolt right up to it.

If you really have an 86 with the 305 HO why mess with it? Weren't there only 75 made? It's got to be worth something as there can't be many left.
