Dent in Oil Pan- Crankshaft Hitting

I have a large dent in my oil pan, and while the car is crunk the crankshaft is hitting the pan as it turn. What is the worst that could happen if I keep cranking it like this? Also, what is the best way for me to change an oil pan?

well first off STOP starting or cranking it and it will most likely rip a hole in the pan for sure not to mention put some metal peices or shavings fromt he pan into the oil and thats disasterous

changing the oil pan will require you lifting the engine high enough to get the pan off and slid out over the crossmember or pulling the engine out its not the easiest job to do.

but do it .

The worst that could happen is that the crank could wear a hole in the pan and the oil would then fall out.

The best way to change the pan is to remove the old one, and install a new one.

You can often use a slide-hammer type of dent puller to pull a dent out; and then braze the hole over.

you dont think that wearing a hole in the pan will put shavings in the oil?..

Drain the oil. Un-bolt the engine mounts. Put your floor-jack underneath the oil pan, with a large block of wood (piece of 2x6?) between the jack and oil pan to distribute the weight more evenly. Disconnect your distributor cap and anything else on top of the engine that might hit up against the firewall. Jack the engine up about 6 inches. Put blocks of wood between the engine mounts and engine block on each side. Lower the engine onto these blocks. Remove oil pan (once it's dropped down, you'll probably have to turn the crank slowly to the "sweet spot" that you can squeeze the pan by to take it off fully). Scrape excess gasket off. Put new pan on with new gasket and silicone. Fill with oil.

That's the easiest way if you don't have a engine hoist handy.

Anything small enough to get through the screen in the pickup, will have enough room to go around the gears.

This thread is over 3 years old, but that's not how the bypass works.
