94 LT1 out of a cop caprice - few questions
Okay.
This is out of a '94 Caprice cop car. And I know it is a cop motor because it's sitting in the car right now. Dunno if that makes it special, but I heard they were a little more souped up.
First question - It has an air cleaner that is the standard box shape, out of the right side of the engine, looking from the front bumper. On the top of the hose coming out from the fuel injection system there is a large hole, with a clamp around it. There are also brackets above the fuel injection setup - What went there?
Second Question - What does this motor currently have and what are it's power ratings. I could find listings for regular non-cop LT1s, but like I said before, I don't know if it makes a difference. I assume it does.
Thanks guys, I'll probably have more questions.

Well, I dont remember what body type the Caprice is off the top of my head, but you could probably find better answers at www.camaroz28.com they specialize in 4th gens. I'm fairly sure that there's a bit of a difference in the power ratings of the Caprice's vs F-Body's LT1s.

The LT1 engine, as an option on all 1994-1996 B and D platform cars, were all identical. Not souped up, just identical. Only the speed limiter programmed within the PCM makes the performance different, among police and non-police versions. The 9C1 also got 3.08, as did the Impala SS; the non-police/Impala got either 2.56 or 2.93 depending on whether the car had the towing package, and/or whether the car was a wagon or sedan.
With that said, ther were (and are) very good for hauling a 4200 lb car to 15.0 quarter mile timeslips bone stock in good cool weather. My 94 ran 15.0 and 15.1 with 122k miles under less than ideal conditions, and it was almost bone stock.
The cop car option is identified by the 9C1 option code on the trunk sticker. From the engine bay, the cop car is also noted by the 1T1 (green) silicone rubber hoses, as well as the auxillary red power feed on the pass side fender, and the extra radio ground straps seen on the hood, trunk, and tailpipes.

The big round hole in the big rubber intake air elbow (not fuel injection system, as you describe it), hockey puck sized, was where an acoustic noise control resonator used to go. That missing one is called the home plate, because it has that kind of shape. The resonator, plus the other two in the intake path are used to quell WOT noice. Plug the big hole with a hockey puck and a large diam hose clamp.
Second Question - What does this motor currently have and what are it's power ratings. I could find listings for regular non-cop LT1s, but like I said before, I don't know if it makes a difference. I assume it does.

And just because you (urbanhunter44) have a 94 copcar engine, doesn't mean it has to be an LT1 engine --- it could be an L99. IIRC you can check the casting numbers on the block and on the heads to tell the difference, but you'll have to look on the Bcar web sites to find the relevant casting #s. You can also pull one head off and measure the cylinder bore. HTH.

You beat me to it. I was going to mention that a lot of SEO vehicle got the L99 for "fuel efficiency" reasons. The L99 and LT1 are externally visually identical, except for the casting marks and numbers. Most L99s had a "4.3" cast on the LH side of the case. If the engine is original in the car, you can be fairly certain it is the LT1 if the eighth digit of the VIN is "P".
On the up-side, all B-Car LT1 had the vented OptiSpark, which enhances its life over the non-vented version. If you want a little more info, with perhaps not as much of the same technical strength you'll find here, try looking at http://www.impalasuperstore.com/naisso/home/
The iron heads are not also more durable, but offer better flow than the aluminum LT1 heads. Better yet, they can be easily ported, and accept larger valves without having to machine for and install larger valve seat inserts. My '94 has 2.02/1.60 valves to compliment the porting and (second) Comp cam. Suffice it to say that for just over $1K of engine mods and parts, it does considerably better than the "15-second" metric with the 3.08 gears. I can do 13.28s all day long without even panting - with the jack, spare, 1/2 fuel, and all road equipment installed. Some day I suppose I should try it with no spare/jack, only 1/4 tank of fuel, "first base" and "home plate" removed, and no subwoofers.
