Fuel Pump Access

Fuel Pump Access
It’s looking like I am going to have to replace the fuel pump in my ’91 Formula 350. I am not real excited about the idea of tearing the whole rear end apart to get to the fuel pump. Has anyone tried cutting an access hole above the fuel tank to gain access to the fuel pump? If so where exactly did you cut and with what. I realize that a oxy-acetylene torch or plasma cutter is probably not the way to go, I was thinking of air shears or an air nibbler. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

After exploring options for a week with the car sitting in the driveway...I brought it in and had it changed for 400 CDN. I brought them the pump which I got for 80 CDN.
Not a bad deal since they broke all kinds of bolts and changed some rear suspension components (swap bar endlinks).

Most guys are gonna tell you to drop the rear and do it right, not to butcher up the body of the car even though it'll be hidden by the carpet... The rear end really isn't that bad. I think the brake lines and e-brake cable are the worst part of the whole thing. Personally, that's what I'm gonna do (drop the rear). I wouldn't even consider cutting into the body of the car. It has a nice ring to it, and would probably be easy to do, but how often do you have to access the fuel pump?

Yeah, I dropped my axle down and pulled the tank out. That'd have to be one helluva hole to cut; steel lines from the pump/sending unit follow the downward curve of the tank for a bit.

Im going to disagree with the majority here and say go ahead and cut a hole. Most ricers have access plates under the back seats or in the trunk it would be nice to have an access plate in an fbody and it will be covered with carpet.

I'll just refer you to this post:

The only way around cutting the fuel lines is to make a much bigger hole. Your choice.

I wouldn't cut up the floor but if you insist on doing it, you can also refer to this:
