Weird gas gauge

Hi guys, my gas gauge seems to be fluctuating all over the place. If I go up a hill it will slowly decrease and when I go down a hill it will slowly move up towards full on the gauge. Even if I drive on a flat road it will still not read correctly(sometimes it stays in the correct position then after a while it tends to wander..

Still doesn`t seem right it never used to due this before. my tank was at a quarter yesterday and after a little while it climbed to 1/2 of a tank at stayed there for a while would not move(I was driving on a flat surface)

What gives???....could it be a loose connection???....maybe it is the contacts on the gauge cluster itself????....should I clean them?????

100% normal for a GM of our era. But it should not wander more than about 1/8 of a tank and will move toward empty under hard braking.....

Maybe the sender is bad or a possible intermittant short to ground...

Does it favor one direction? Maybe you drive like a maniac (I bet I could get mine to wander over 1/4 a tank if I tried)

I agree, those gas guages are far from accurate. After I had my fuel pump replaced, the needle will show about 1/8th of a tank but I will run out of gas.

The best way to judge it would be to fill it up, reset the trip odometer, and pay attention to when the needle starts to move from full. When it starts to get close to the 1/4 mark, fill it back up to figure out exactly how much gas was left in the tank.
1/4 tank on my guage means about 2-3 gallons of gas left.

Mine does the same thing. I would have a full tank for most of the day and then all of a sudden I would have 3/4 of a tank in a matter of seconds. It did it on my 84 and my 91. I just think the gauge setup suckz.
