Speedo Q
I bought the car in california, and will be flying out there to drive it home soon. I was out there this week and test drove it. The speedo no worky. the kid says he put a new speedo gear in it and that the old one was chewed up alittle, however, still no worky.BTW, the tailshaft gear was fine, he said. The car is giving a VSS code, could the VSS be the prob?
Maybe the speedo itself? Possibly the cable?I want to fix it before I drive 2000 miles home. I'm a trucker, and I saw multiple speed traps between there and home.
The car runs terrific, body is solid, no squeaks, doors don't sag,
Shifts great, tighter than any T-5 Shifter I've ever seen, but the tranny whines under acceleration.

I think, but I'm not positive, that the 90-92's use theVSS for the speedo.
Thing is, if you know the rear gear ratio and the tach works, you can still get across country by doing a little math.
BTW, who ever heard of a trucker being concerned with MPH's?

Hmmn....
Mines an '89 as well, pretty sure the VSS is up in the cluster, and is cable driven...and cable/gear to the speedo.
Could be...
Cable froze, etc, and chewed the gear and broke the cable?
So replaceing the gear get's just 1/2 of the problem.
Where abouts are you getting the car, if close, you can come by and we can diag it some before you head across country.
BTW, I pulled bottom dumps for 4 years before I fixed the speedo in my '69 Pete...no tickets either

The Car is in Sacremento, about 80 miles north on 99. I will be running I-80 to reno, then taking US-50 through nevada and Utah to I -70. great running, especially for a leadfoot like me, with a new toy to test!!

You'll be about 70 miles from me...about 50 miles south on 99 and 20 miles of rural driving.
Holler if you need some space to do something before you take off.
