88 firebird help

I got a 88 firebird(2.8)..Stoped driveing it a bout 2years ago, For the first year i would start it up once in awhile but for about the lastyear i did really start it up at all..About a week ago i tried to get it going again but i cant get it running..

I can shot some starting fluid in it and it will fire up but it would say running, Its like there is no gas getting in to keep it fireing.

I do have gas in it, Half tank..

Thanks for any help..

If everything ran well before you parked it and when you last started it, then it's prolly just gummed-up fuel injectors. So you're right, it's not getting any or much gas. And if you didn't stabilize the gas, then it isn't very good anymore either.

Dump a bottle of fuel system cleaner in the tank(Chevron Techron is good), and let it sit a day before trying to start it again.

You could even syphon out the old gas and/or put in some new before you dump the cleaner in. But still let it sit. Then when you fire it up, it'll be a little rough for a short time, so don't force it. Just let it idle a long time 'til it's good and warmed up.

That'd be your best bet. If the gas was in there this whole time, definitely get rid of it. Empty the tank, replace the fuel filter, and run some fuel injector cleaner with a half tank of fresh gas.

I'm sure someone will respond with a picture. You can do a search for fuel filter or something like that and you should find a few threads.

Its on the underbody of the car right below where the driver's side rear seat is basically. Right below the gas tank. Change the fuel filter while you have all of the gas out of the tank, it will make it a lot easier for ya (no gas draining on your arms then). Its usually not a hard job to do, just make sure you have the right tools. I think I just used two adjustable wrenches, but they usually recommend to have the flare-nut wrenches for the fuel filter. Make sure you use two wrenches though (one on each bolt for one side, and then do the other side), and make sure you apply pressure in teh correct directions..

Well, I just got done putting the new fuel filter, But when i took off the old filter i really didnt get any gas from the gas line, I thought i could turn the car over and the gas from the gas tank would shoot out of the gas line but it didnt.

Is it supposed to squirt out the fuel line????

If it is i'm guessing the fuel pump is no good?

I also left the old gas in it, I cant syphon the old gas out or cant get it to come out the fuel line so i lelf it in there and add some fuel cleaner stuff..

What the hell is this

There is like a tar all over the pump and some on the bottom of the tank.

Don't know what that crud is, but since you already have the tank dropped, I'd take it somewhere and get it cleaned out.

While you're at it, blow out the fuel lines with some air to. Hopefully they aren't full of that crud.

Just looks like a typical old gas tank to me. Except, usually that stuff when I've seen it is more brown, than black. Maybe some local variant of your gasoline additive package is dofferent from mine.

Nobody ever believes me when they post classic fuel starvation symptoms, and I tell them it's probably crusties in the gas tank.....

I doubt that compressed air will get that out. You'll probably have to rod it to get it out. Coat hanger wire works great.
