Car: 1984 Camaro Z28
Engine: base crate 350, new GM
Transmission: T5
Speedometer swap
i have an 84 z28 with the stock 85 mph speedometer. does anyone know if i can buy a speedometer with a higher max mph (not that i plan on goin faster than 85, he he ) to directly replace my stock one in my dash.
p.s. - i know there are external speedometers that i can buy, but i am looking for a direct replacement for the stock one with a higher max mph.

The only thing that will replace a stock speedometer is another stock speedometer. Twenty years ago when these cars were new and the fastest speedo you could get was 85 mph, there were aftermarket ones available that turn up now and then, but they're too rare to worry about.

I swapped a 120mph into my original 85mph car no problem. Simple replacement. The hardest part will be finding one to swap.

I have a 145 mph one out of about a 87 or so IROC. Direct swap-in. Requires that you use the 87 bezel, because the trip odometer reset stalk comes out in a different place. Takes about 10 minutes to swap if you stop for a cold one halfway through.

so i am gathering the instrument cluster on pretty much all the third gens are the same shape and size for an easy swap in and out...

Anything from an 82 to 90 Camaro will fit, but in 1988 the locations of some of the warning lights changed after they stopped making carbed cars. The location of the trip odometer reset changed like RB83L69 mentions too. In 1991 the dash changed significantly and Camaros got electronic speedometers. Firebird dashes are entirely different.

I believe my speedometer has a 5 inch diameter. So as long as it is the same size, and requires the mechanical speedometer cable to operate, it should fit.

I don't know that the Camaro and Firebird speedometers are mounted into the gauge clusters in the same way.

I dont think that they are mounted the same as in the clusterbut I was wondering if the guage itself could be taken from the Transam and changed to the Camaro. I thought that if all I need was the guage , then all I would have to do is remove and reinstall it to the Camaro. Trouble is, I dont have the Transam nearby to confirm. Would probably need to measure and make sure the screws line up. Anyone have both to compare? As far as I know no one has talked about this sort of switch.

Cant the guage itself be taken out of its transam cluster and installed in the camaro cluster? Thats what I was getting to. If they are the same size then you should be able to transfer them into another cluster. I cant believe that GM would make two different sized guages.

Only if the mounting holes are the same. The Camaro and Firebird clusters are entirely different, so I wouldn't count on it.
