i have popcorn in my headers
hey guys
i have an 83 camaro with a threeofive it has a quadrajet carb on it right now. if i give it too much throttle whether in park of just driving after i let up on it it sounds like popcorn popping under the passanger side. my theory is that the carb is shot and deumping way too much fuel into the headers and its exploding there and since the exhaust runs under the passanger side floor, that made sense to me.
what do you think

(she'll spin em into third)

i'd say you're right about the fuel getting into the headers and burning there. might be a leaking valve, timing, carb, bad plug/wire, or a few other things. best to check and make sure you have a good tune up first and then start looking for something if it keep up.

ive jsut done the tune up new wires plugs, etc but i noticed that whne i leave the shifter id drive(instead of shifting it my self) it shifts early, before the max power seems to have been attained.... could this be from bad timeing?
the motor has 22000 miles on it (total rebuild last year)

More likely than unburnt fuel is the catalitic converter. Do you still have one?
Its right under the pass side floor and it can pop when it gets hot more like a tick- tick sound. My guess is the cats plugged up.

I don't have headers but my car made a similar sound, back when it was running . I figured it to be the heat riser valve. It only happened when the engine was idling down and under compression braking. I haven't figured out for sure what caused this but I think the Heat riser valve is the culprit, somehow.

If you're getting an intermittent pop from the exhaust you probably have a header gasket leak. Unburnt fuel gets into the exuaust no matter what you do. It usually passes out the exhaust without popping- UNLESS there is an exhaust leak letting fresh oxygen in somewhere. Then you get popping, expecially on the over-run as the engine is spinning down from high RPMs.
Even without a leak there will be SOME popping and snarling on the over-run. That's how carbureted engines are. FI motors they turn the injectors OFF during an over-run condition so there's no popping in the exhaust. Carbs ain't like that. However, extremely retarded timing will make this situation worse.
