need help with ignition

I have a 1990 camaro 3.1L V6. I only get 8 MPG. I did a tune up, no help . I want to adjust the ignition timing but I never did it, can someone tell me step by step how to do it?

V6,

If you did a "tune up" but didn't check the base timing, exactly what steps did you perform?

A "tune up" for an FI engine should include the following:

1. Cooling system inspection;
2. Clean or replace spark plugs;
3. Ignition wire testing;
4. Distributor cap/rotor (if you don't have the OptiSpark);
5. PCV valve cleaning or replacement;
6. Air filter;
7. Cleaning the IAC;
8. Checking/setting TPS voltage;
9. Check/adjust minimum air rate;
10. Check/adjust timing;
11. Code scan.

Maybe you should go back and clean up a few missed items, then report back with the remaining problems. I'll bet there aren't too many.

v6-3.1,
Check out the "Technical Articles" section of this site to get in depth lessons on your tuning questions!
** I'm not sure if the voltage specs are the same for the 6-shooter as they are for the V8s. Anybody know what voltage V6 TPSs should be set at?

Your ALDL (Assembly Line Diagnostic Link) is where you would either plug in a scanner or a paper clip to pull your trouble codes. It should be above your right knee when you sit in the driver's seat and might be covered with a little plastic piece. It is about 1" x3". You should really look through the tech articles section, it will explain how to pull the codes and what they mean.

The tech article did not give an informative tutorial about the TPS.for the TPS(Throttle Positioning Switch) , can I use a regular voltometer (needle type), can someone give me more info? also is the IAC the same as the minimum air rate?

I also read that the 90-92 TPS are self adjustable and do not need to be tampered with, is this true??

Yes, the 90-92 TPS is not adjustable, it uses the voltage given when the throttle is closed as the base unless it is over 1.0v. I guess the tech article on how to adjust the TPS wouldn't apply to you then.....
