general ? about crate engines
So im sure you all have seen various companies like BRE, GMPP, speed-o-motive, lingenfelter(mucho $$), and some company that was mentioned in a recent post, http://golensengineservice.com advertised in magazines and what have you. Take two similar engines from two companies, like a 400hp 383 from beck racing engines, and its gonna run you about 6k bucks when its all said and done... now, go to golensengines, and the same (well, not really) engine, another 383(400hp) will only set you back 2500bucks... what gives? im guessing either BRE charges more because they are a big name in the crate engine business, and the latter company is more realistic, or BRE just does a damn fine job of building their engines and golens engines cuts a few corners..I've read(and heard) lots of nice stuff about BRE, and from what they say, they pay attention to detail like no other. Golens, also appears to go through the whole 'proper' process of preparing the various engine components.. yet they only want to charge half as much? from glancing over each of the two engines i've mentioned, the major difference is the heads, BRE utilizes Dart, and Golens stock(boo!).. anyways, tell me what you all make of it. and btw, here are links to both engines

- 83 Z28--ttops, 200k miles--very ragged out. sold, thank goodness
- 74 Z28--slightly modded 383, TH400 tranny, not too quick but fun to drive

They don't just extra charge for the name (they may somewhat but), some people are better at building engines and some use better parts. You should really look into what their building. Like cast or steel or forged crank and so on for every parts.... Most of the time you'll find differences in parts used.

I didn't look at the different engines but I will tell you a few differences in engine building that can make a big difference.
1. Sonic checking the cylinder walls. (used block)
2. Magnafluxing the rods. (reconditioned)
3. Individually file fitting the piston rings.
4. Individually fitting all bearings for correct clearance instead of a bearing kit.
5. Multiple torque sequences instead of one or two.
6. Chasing all threads with a tap.
7. Torquing components based on bolt stretch and not torque on a torque wrench.
8. Hand massaging the piston top to relieve any potential hot spots.
9. Any porting including bowl blending.
10. Use of thin stem swirl polished valves instead of SR valves.
11. Multiple angle valve jobs vice one angle.
12. Port Matching.
13. Correctly installed shimmed valvesprings versus just installing a set of valve springs.
14. High quality valve guides versus SR.
15. Correctly blueprinted oil pump instead of one straight out of the box.
16. Casting flash removal on various parts.
17. Higher quality parts (fasteners, gaskets, pushrods, rockers, lifters etc.)
That's a pretty good quick list.
