Carbed L98, what rpm does the cam fall of at?

Im running a stock L98 block and heads. I installed a intake and carb. The motor still has the stock 92 L98 cam.

What rpm would this cam start falling of at?

More info in my sig. thanks.

Well, I'm sure you've already expected to get the "it depends" answer given the limited info so I'll skip over that obvious response.

By 5000 it should start to flatten out. By 5500 it's going to be pretty obvious it's time to shift. By 6000 you'll be floating the valves if you're still using the stock valve springs, but even if you've upgraded them there's just nothing to be gained by revving it that high.

Well for more info: the heads are stock, Team-G intake is a single plane.

I had been shifting at 5800. I think 5500 or 5600 would be better. I should get better ET's. I think at 5800 I am dropping off. I guess more test & tune is the answer.

FYI that is a very mismatched combo. That intake is way to big for you heads and cam. I'd suggest a more reasonable intake, but thats just me.

When I had my carbed L98 with a 750 Holley and Edelbrock RPM intake (otherwise stock) I'd shift at 5500RPM which would net me 14.2's @ 98mph all day long. The car does begin to nose over around 5200RPM but I found that it would respond better when you shifted gears if you slightly over-revved it.

Yeah, I think I am over reving it shifting at 5800.

Funny thing is, Last time at the track, I ran a 14.20 on my last run. Thats with the trans not working right. It wouldnt shift from 2nd to drive. The rpms would just keep climing untill I let out of the throttle. Then it would shift.

I could have gotten in the teens with a better burnout and more air in the front tires. I had like a 2.07 60 ft times. I think with the trans built and a good converter + traction. I should get high 13's out of the stock longblock.

Yeah, I know that the intake is big. I plan on doing a 383 buildup later on.

I plan on pulling the heads and having some work done to them. I also plan on using a comp xe276hr cam with springs to match. Hopefully I can get down into the mid to high 13's. Should be no problem if I get the trans built and about a 2800-3000 stall.

Would this be a better combo untill I build the 383? Or would the xe270hr10 be a better choice?
