AIR/Smog pump removal: worth it?
Speaks for it self. Dosen't look like a terrible PITA and would get rid of some of those damn hoses that run all over the place. Would there be any performance gain, or at least enough to justify doing it?
Emissions is no concern, but MPG kinda is.
Hhaha anyone sick of me asking questions on a daily basis yet? But thanks to everyone who always answers! Maybe eventually i'll be able to actually give an intelligent answer to stuff besides how to get your hatch motor to work when it goes for a loop.
Can't wait till i make this insurance payment, then i can scrape some $$ together for the cat back and open element....

I just did this and it probably removed about 10-20 pounds from my car. Cleans up the engine compartment nicely. It does reduce drag on the belt & engine, therefore adding some horsepower (not real noticeable), and reduces weight which is always good. I think every little bit counts, so it was worth it to me. Hope i helped, Doug

I did it too. Its probebly more like 30 lbs. That compressor is heavy. I got alot of room now in the engine bay. I can even see my valve cover now

I haven't done this yet, but was thinking of. However, I yield one concern for you. If you take off the emmissions and still have a cat you are in risk of blowing it, cause all that fuel that is unburnt if going to get stuck in there. If you don't care about emmissions then take it out, be sure to plug up the air tubes or cut them off and fix the hole so no dreadful fumes come back in the motor, and slam a pipe inplace of that cat. Good luck, let me know how it goes. BTW I have heard from some people that this is good for about 5 hp through most of the rpm range but way up top 5000+ it's good for almost 20. I don't know if it is true, but it certainly couldn't hurt.

Oh yeah i guess i shoulda mentioned I'd do this after Open element and full exhaust and ditching the cat. (summer projects) I could sure use that extra twist on the top end! Thanks for the input guys!

I agree with everyone I noticed the same things and plus that damn plug on the back passenger side is a breeze to replace. This was the best free mod for me!

Rock,
Depending on your reasons for removing the system, Yes (or No).
If you are doing it for the horsepower gain, forget it. The peak power requirement of the air pump (not compressor) is about 2HP @ 4,500 RPM engine speed. If you have emissions inspections, you should also forget the removal.
However, if you want to reduce the weight and plumbing in the engine bay, go right ahead. The power difference (if there is one) will be invisible, but your sprak plugs will suddenly appear.
One suggestion if you do remove it - savets and pieces and take a photo of the installation before you remove it. If you ever move to an area where emissions inspections are mandatory, or if the inspections become mandatory in your area, you'll need the hardware. Even if you don't ever need it, many people hunt for these parts to replace thier missing systems when inspections are required (eBay?).
